Decoding the mystical appeal ft. The Irregulars show
The poster of a show captures the essence of the art created and narrated by the storyteller.
A story delves in multiple directions. To find the focal point of these directions and sum them up into one specific position graphically is a creative and innovative task.
As a marketer of the show, you often ask the question, "What’s the one thing I want my audience to talk about?”
When you find the “main talking point” that becomes the highlight or the focal point of your show, you start designing the poster accordingly.
Let’s analyze how the marketers of the Netflix Original, The Irregulars highlighted their show’s essence through its poster.
Before we move ahead, let me tell you that I don’t know what this show is all about. I have decided to make things interesting for you and me by interpreting the creator’s artwork solely through the poster.
Let’s begin the road to inspiration and observation!
As I looked at the poster, I read the distinctly appearing orangish-colored title — The Irregulars. The title is indeed eye-catching in the blue-black backdrop of the poster.
Staying true to its meaning, the orange color did bring excitement and energy against the powerful, dark, mystery, and thriller-filled vibes of the blue-black color.
The emotion of optimism remains for a short period of time, though. The blues and the blacks reminded me of the post-apocalyptic world.
As you start observing the five characters placed just above the title, their bold and dusty faces relate them to the saviors of this dark era. What’s more our heroes seem to be wearing swords just like trained warriors.
But they are at a war with whom? Look just below the title.
See lots of creepy crawlies and monsters underground? Doesn’t it look like they are trying to come above the ground to haunt people?
To create the scary and haunted look, one can also see a ghoulish hand touching the “U” of Irregulars and two heads of monsters just left to the title.
The monsters and warriors are separated by the ground. The juxtaposition is also represented by the opposite side looking “R”s of the title.
The warriors seem to be protecting a castle or some university or houses behind. That’s when you see an address plate—"221 B Bakers Street"—hanging from what appears to be the gates of a house.
Corresponding to the address is also the tagline of the show “A Darkness has come to London”. So, the story revolves around the streets of London. The address of the house could be where these five warriors live.
A picture forms in our mind of a dark and powerful force coming soon to haunt Londoners. These little monsters could just be the beginning of post-apocalyptic London.
To create a glimmer of hope, subtle white and blue colors have also been used as the light around our warriors.
With the rubble and destruction and the dusty look, the show seems like a classic mystery and action-filled show.
The grungy font of the title “The Irregulars” has a rough, jagged appearance suggesting decay, rot, or violence. The font choice could have been purposefully made to depict the “monster” feel.
But who are The Irregulars? The deformed monsters or our eccentric warriors?
Seems like an interesting thing to find out by watching the show!
Well, what did you interpret from the poster? For those who have watched the show, were you able to relate to some parts of my interpretation?
Let me know what you think! Would love to know your thoughts and point of view!
